While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Thousands of flavored, high-nicotine, and relatively cheap e-cigarette products remain on the market — many of them illegally — driving youth use and nicotine addiction. Equally concerning, nearly half of young people who have ever tried e-cigarettes continue to use them, and many do so daily. As encouraging as the data was a few years ago, it’s starting to look like that’s not the case. The FDA is yet to approve them as a smoking cessation aid and a recent CDC study found that most adult e-cigarette users — 58.8 percent of them — don't stop smoking cigarettes and instead wind up using both products. Among girls, only a higher proportion of never-users in the school remained protective for S-SM and S-EC. Among boys, the same was observed for S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards snus use in one’s age group increased S-SN. Interestingly, a higher proportion of students planning for general upper secondary education had lowered S-EC and S-SN in the univariate analyses but increased S-SM and S-SN in the multivariate models. This may reflect, for instance, more complex interactions between individual- and school-level factors influencing susceptibility among boys. In general, students with positive attitude towards product use in one’s age group and current use of some other tobacco or nicotine product had consistently higher susceptibility regardless of product type.
The increasing number of adolescent users and reported deaths in the United States prompted the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes in 2020. The high standard deviation for glyoxal and methylglyoxal observed in BB18 e-cigarette emissions is probably related to an analytical sample matrix effect and/or batch variability83,96,97. Despite the high standard deviation, the percentage reduction of glyoxal and methylglyoxal in both e-cigarette emissions relative to cigarette smoke was ≥ 97.0% and ≥ 94.5%, respectively (Table 3).
However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The sleek shapes and appealing flavors such as cotton candy, mango, and strawberry have made e-cigarettes especially enticing to youth. If you're a smoker trying to quit, you might prefer a cigalike model as the experience is as close to smoking as possible. If you like to perform tricks, you might find that a cloud kit or sub-ohm device is better suited to your needs. If you simply want to experiment with different e-liquid flavours, a standard vape pen should cater to your needs. Here at The Electric Tobacconist, we have a large selection of devices on offer that you can browse through. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have had a lot of interest recently as a replacement for smoking traditional cigarettes.
The harmful effects of CS and their deleterious consequences are both well recognised and widely investigated. However, and based on the studies carried out so far, it seems that e-cigarette consumption is less toxic than tobacco smoking. This does not necessarily mean, however, that e-cigarettes are free from hazardous effects. Indeed, studies investigating their long-term effects on human health are urgently required. In this regard, the main additional studies needed in this field are summarized in Table 3.
"When you are out and about with your children and see an advertisement, for example, take the opportunity to talk about it," she says. As they grow older, parents can expand on their thoughts and expectations. "It’s also important to give teens and young adults the space to ask questions," she says. The 2023 NYTS showed that about 2 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Another study that year found that the rates of youth who say they vaped with nicotine in the past month more than doubled in two years. About 11% of high school seniors reported this habit in 2017, compared to 25%, or one in four seniors, in 2019.
The Lung Association remains extremely troubled about the rapid increase of youth using these products and has repeatedly called upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase their oversight and scrutiny of these products to protect kids. This is Quitting is a free and anonymous text messaging program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind quit program has helped over 700,000 youth and young adults quit vaping by incorporating messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes. Truth Initiative is America's largest nonprofit public health organization committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all.
Others can be refilled with liquid, recharged, and used over and over. Our Board of Health is a leader in protecting people from the dangers of e-cigarettes and vapor products. Vapes contain nicotine and other substances like THC that negatively affect brain development in youth. Nicotine is also highly addictive and can lead to smoking later in life. Vapes are electronic devices designed to deliver vapourised liquids into your lungs when you breathe in.
Starting to use e-cigarettes or switching from tobacco products to e-cigarettes increases your risk of adverse health effects. Interestingly, there is a strong difference of opinion on e-cigarettes between countries. Whereas countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and India have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, others such as the United Kingdom support this device to quit smoking.
You can feel confident buying rechargeable vape kits and e-cigarettes from our range of popular brands, including blu, IQOS, JUUL, Caliburn, VUSE and many more. According to data from the ministry's tobacco cell, there were 44 violations so far this financial year, 263 in FY24, and 33 in FY23, indicating the presence of vapes in the black market. According to government data, in FY22, 48 violations were reported, with no cases in FY21. Emerging evidence suggests some of the highest successful quit rates are now seen among smokers who use an e-cigarette and also receive additional support from their local stop smoking services. The review, commissioned by PHE and led by Professor Ann McNeill (King’s College London) and Professor Peter Hajek (Queen Mary University of London), suggests that e-cigarettes may be contributing to falling smoking rates among adults and young people. Following the review PHE has published a paper on the implications of the evidence for policy and practice.
The replaceable liquid cartridge contains nicotine mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), along with flavorings and chemicals. The tip often contains LED lights that simulate the glow of a burning cigarette. Nicotine poisoning can occur when someone ingests, inhales, or absorbs nicotine through the skin or eyes. It can be particularly dangerous for children and young adults, as they are more susceptible to the effects of nicotine. The tax must be broken out as a separate amount from the products sold in any transaction.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.
Please be advised that many of these stories contain graphic and upsetting photos of injuries. Exposure to nicotine can also rewire a young brain to become more easily addicted to other substances, including cocaine and alcohol. Even if a cartridge doesn’t contain nicotine, other harmful chemicals may be present.
Similar results emerged when they excluded individual states with statewide policies from the analysis, showing that no one state was driving this effect. Bans on all vapes, including both flavored and unflavored, also resulted in more cigarette sales. The authors used rigorous statistical tools to estimate long-term effects of e-cigarette flavor restrictions on electronic and conventional cigarette sales in jurisdictions across 16 states. They also examined how these effects varied between brands disproportionately used by underage youth versus adults. Find more information on Iowa’s e-cigarette-related laws and regulations from the Public Health Law Center at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. As a parent or caregiver, you have an important role in protecting children from e-cigarettes.
You may have heard the benefits of vaping are that it’s safe or that it helps you quit smoking. Some people vape because they think it’ll help them quit smoking if they’ve already tried other methods and haven’t been able to quit. Unfortunately, you may end up addicted to vaping instead, so the benefits of vaping for smoking cessation may not be as good as they seem.
A note from Cleveland ClinicNicotine poisoning is on the rise, mostly due to the availability of some of the newer forms of nicotine that are now popular. Children eat cigarettes and can be accidentally poisoned by touching, tasting or swallowing liquid nicotine or liquid nicotine-containing products used in e-cigarettes. To keep you and your family and pets safe from nicotine poisoning, the most effective approach would be to eliminate or ban tobacco-containing or nicotine-containing products in your home. If you're interested in quitting smoking, your healthcare team is here, ready and looking forward to helping you. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are harmful to your health. All are technically capable of causing poisoning if taken in large enough quantities.
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Minnesota youth who have asthma are more likely than their peers to smoke or vape, and people who have asthma who smoke or vape are likely to experience worsening symptoms and require medical treatment. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
Health services in the United Kingdom say that vaping can be an effective tool for quitting smoking. Additionally, in 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permitted the marketing of three e-cigarette products, specifically citing their potential benefit in helping people quit smoking. Quitting is your best option to reduce your risk from smoking and tobacco use-related diseases.
E-cigarettes aren't thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they're less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people a year in the United States. Most of the harm comes from the thousands of chemicals that are burned and inhaled in the smoke, he explains. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that can look like a real cigarette or pen.
Advertisements for vapes are also restricted in youth-centered areas like parks. Meanwhile, California was the least popular state for youth vaping, as just six percent of teens had picked up the habit. Louisiana and Montana tied to round out the top five, both with a quarter of teens using e-cigarettes.
In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. A second brand of e-cigarettes—marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe—contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine.
At present, reference products for e-cigarette testing are not available. E-liquids are an important part of any vaping system and their composition, together with the characteristics of the device, may have an impact on nicotine delivery21. They mainly constitute a mix of propylene glycol (PG), glycerol (vegetable glycerine or VG) and nicotine. E-liquids may include flavouring compounds and usually come in different nicotine strengths or concentrations. Meanwhile, the government has so far issued 14,795 challans under Section 6 of The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which prohibits the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to and by persons below 18 years. The Union Health and Family Ministry's tobacco cell has reported 350 vape-related violations since 2022.
And, our starter kits and disposable vape pens are a great, simple way to make the switch from smoking to vaping. We also have a wide selection of advanced kits for vapers who prefer high-powered cloud chasing e-cigs. Increasing consumer awareness of the environmental toxicity and dangers posed by discarding e-cigarette waste into landfills and encouraging vapers to quit are the best ways to protect the environment from tobacco product waste. Currently, there is no standardized way to recycle e-cigarettes in the U.S. Starting in 2019, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) began accepting e-cigarette devices and cartridges during their annual National Prescription Take Back Day, although the DEA cannot accept devices containing lithium ion batteries.
More research is needed to address the potential long-term adverse effects of vaping on vascular health, but he predicts that e-cigarettes are potentially much more hazardous than previously assumed. Earlier this year, for instance, his research group found that acute exposure to e-cigarettes causes vascular inflammation. One in four middle school and high school students in Minnesota had tried e-cigarettes (teens call it vaping or juuling). Half of high school seniors reported having tried e-cigarettes at least once. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes among Minnesota’s youth caused the first rise in overall tobacco use in over two decades.
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020.
Most of the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, including tar and carbon monoxide, are not contained in vape aerosol. Switching to vaping significantly reduces your exposure to toxins that can cause cancer, lung disease, and diseases of the heart and circulation like heart attack and stroke. These diseases are not caused by nicotine, which is relatively harmless to health.
The e-liquid is quickly heated and converted to an aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs. As smoking has declined dramatically in the U.S., vaping has gained tremendous popularity very quickly. A 2018 study reported 20% of high schoolers vaped at least once in the past 30 days. Since e-cigarettes often contain the same chemicals as traditional cigarettes, smoke produced by vaping may be toxic to people nearby. Manufacturers claim that e-cigarettes bypass many of the health risks of tobacco smoking, providing a healthful alternative.
Use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material improves heating efficiency, but how it affects the chemical emissions of these devices is unclear. We assessed the emissions of a pod e-cigarette with innovative ceramic wick-based technology and two flavoured e-liquids containing nicotine lactate and nicotine benzoate (57 and 18 mg mL−1 nicotine, respectively). Among the studied harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) listed by the US FDA and/or WHO TobReg, only 5 (acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, naphthalene and nornicotine) were quantified at levels of 0.14 to 100 ng puff−1. In the combustible cigarette (Kentucky reference 1R6F), levels were from 0.131 to 168 µg puff−1.
It may also increase the risk of developing mood disorders and problems with impulse control. They appeared on the U.S. market in 2015 and are now the top-selling brand of e-cigarette in the country. Although secondhand vapor may not affect the lungs the same way as vaping, it is better to avoid it, if possible. E-cigarettes have been strongly linked to continued tobacco use and are not recommended for young people.
E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. They come in a variety of forms, sometimes looking like USB flash drives, pens, and other items that make them hard for parents and teachers to spot. Other electronic devices that heat tobacco instead of liquid nicotine, such as IQOS, are not considered e-cigarettes. Teens cannot participate in such studies, but "we all agree that e-cigs are not a good thing for youth and nonsmokers," Dr. Baldassarri says. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking.
However, your local Stop Smoking Service may offer a free vaping starter pack. Make sure you buy your vaping products from a reputable retailer so you can be confident they are covered by UK safety and quality regulations. Get advice from a specialist vape shop or a local Stop Smoking Service. Finding the right device and strength of nicotine in your e-liquid may take time – so stick with it.
Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. Both the 1970s electronic cigarettes devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores. The long-term health effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not fully understood, but the science indicates they are not a safe alternative to smoking. Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents.
